Riad La Perle Rouge

Riad La Perle Rouge is a traditional guest house in the Kasbah district of Marrakech, the quiet, residential quarter that grew up around the Royal Palace. Built in the classic riad style, rooms open onto an inner courtyard and patio rather than the street, so the building stays calm and shaded even when the medina outside is at its busiest. Guests rate the whole experience highly, with a Superb 9.2 overall and top marks for the staff, cleanliness and comfort.

It suits couples, families and small groups who want an authentic base within walking distance of Marrakech's headline monuments. The Saadian Tombs, El Badi Palace and the Kasbah Mosque are all just a few minutes on foot, while Jemaa el-Fna square and Bahia Palace are an easy stroll north. Rooms range from cosy doubles to a suite with its own terrace, all air-conditioned and finished with tile floors, a private bathroom and a flat-screen TV.

Beyond the rooms, the riad has a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, a rooftop terrace and an in-house restaurant serving Moroccan cuisine, with Halal and vegetarian options and a continental breakfast each morning. Staff welcome arrivals with mint tea and pastries on the patio and can help arrange transfers and tips for getting around. Payment on site is in cash only.

Rooms at the riad

Riad La Perle Rouge offers nine room types set around the courtyard, from compact doubles and twins to family-sized quadruples and a suite with its own terrace. Whatever the size, they share the same riad character: cool tile or marble floors, soundproofed walls, air conditioning and heating, a private bathroom with a shower, and a flat-screen TV with satellite and streaming channels. Most look onto the peaceful inner courtyard rather than the street.

The range makes it easy to match a room to how you travel. Couples can choose a simple Double Room or step up to a Deluxe or the top-floor Suite with Terrace; families and friends have Comfort Quadruple and Superior Family rooms that sleep up to four. Larger rooms add extras such as a minibar and coffee machine, while the suite comes with a separate living area, dining space and private terrace.

Is this riad right for you?

Yes, if...

  • You want to explore the medina on foot: the Saadian Tombs, El Badi Palace and the Kasbah Mosque are all a few minutes away.
  • You like a calm, authentic base: the Kasbah is one of the medina's quieter, more residential quarters.
  • You value service: guests rate the staff an outstanding 9.8 and are welcomed with mint tea on the patio.
  • You're travelling as a family or group: several rooms sleep up to four around the courtyard.
  • You'd enjoy a dip and a rooftop: there's a seasonal outdoor pool and a terrace for relaxing.

Maybe not, if...

  • You want to pay by card on site: payment at the property is cash only.
  • You need step-free access: like most riads, upper floors are reached by stairs only.
  • You expect the pool open year-round: the outdoor pool is seasonal and closes in cooler months.
  • You plan to drive right to the door: the Kasbah's narrow lanes mean the last stretch is on foot.

Location and what to see

Riad La Perle Rouge sits in the Kasbah, the historic royal quarter on the southern edge of Marrakech's medina. It's one of the calmer, more residential corners of the old city, wrapped around the Royal Palace and famous for the storks that nest on its walls year-round. Traditional shops and cafés line the lanes, yet you're never far from the action: the great square of Jemaa el-Fna is about a 15 to 20-minute walk north.

The setting is ideal for exploring on foot. The Saadian Tombs and the Kasbah Mosque are just around the corner, El Badi Palace is a few minutes further, and Bahia Palace and the Dar Si Said Museum lie a short stroll away. Because the Kasbah's alleys are narrow, taxis drop you at the nearest accessible point and the last stretch is walked, sometimes with a porter to guide you and carry bags.

Getting here is straightforward: Marrakech-Menara Airport is only about 4 km away, roughly a 10 to 15-minute drive, and Marrakesh train station is around 3.5 km for onward trips to Casablanca or the coast. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring the most comfortable weather, while summer days can be very hot, so plan sightseeing for the morning and evening and take advantage of the pool and shaded courtyard in between. Bring some cash, as the riad and many medina shops don't take cards.
